Animal Feed Imports IncreasingBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · November 1, 2003

Figures released by the USDA and the United Nations show that North African and Middle Eastern countries have steadily increased imports of animal feeds in the last decade. Many of these countries have trade barriers limiting the import of meat, thus encouraging domestic livestock production. Corn and sorghum made up about 75% of the import total, and soybeans, soybean meal, and other oilseed products accounted for another 20%. The trend is expected to continue because population growth and gross domestic product for the 20 studied countries are still rising.
