Avoid This Flat-Tire SurpriseBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · February 3, 2010

Did you know that some vehicles require a special key to remove the lug nuts that secure each tire? How about the key that unlocks the spare tire from its resting place? These measures help to prevent theft and vandalism, but they can be a problem if drivers aren't aware of the locking feature and don't have the proper keys with them. The situation is made worse if a loaded horse trailer is involved in the flat-tire incident.

If you aren't certain whether your vehicle has keyed lug nuts and a secured spare tire, check with a vehicle dealer to see if the feature comes standard on the truck model you own. For owners of used vehicles, be sure the previous owner didn't install locks at some point. Check with the dealer or a locksmith to get keys made; carry them with you when you drive; and pack a spare set in the tack trunk that will accompany your vehicle to shows or trail rides.
