Check Barn Roof for Winter DamageBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · April 26, 2011

As you look over your fields, fences, and buildings for maintenance needs, don't forget to give your barn roof an inspection also. Winter ice and winds might have caused damage that should be repaired before the problem gets worse. On the outside, look for missing shingles, loose seals around skylights or fiberglass sections, and nails that have pulled up because of repeated contraction and expansion of materials. On the undersurface of the roof, check for water stains, deteriorating or delaminated wood, and any places where you can see light coming through the roof. Make plans early in the spring to have repairs made so your barn will be ready to store summer hay and provide a dry shelter for your horses in the fall.
