Colostrum Banks Need DonationsBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · February 16, 2012
During the spring foaling season, veterinary hospitals try to fill requests from owners of foals who need colostrum because of the dam’s death, foal’s inability to nurse, or another problem.
Anyone with a pregnant mare is asked to consider collecting extra colostrum and donating this vital protective fluid to an area veterinary hospital. Collection must be done very soon after the mare delivers, and can be achieved without depleting the amount of colostrum ingested by the mare’s own foal.
For basic directions, refer to Collecting Colostrum from a Mare, or ask a veterinarian for assistance.
