Compound Fractures StudiedBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · December 1, 2004
Veterinarians at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center have modified techniques for external fixation of equine compound fractures. The method uses pins through the bone, vertical braces, and a special shoe that combine to keep weight off the fracture site. Earlier models failed because thin pins broke and thicker pins weakened the bone. Changes in design have eliminated these problems, and the external fixator has been used with excellent results in a number of horses.
