The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) that provides funding for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding trail construction and maintenance has been reauthorized as part of the transportation bill approved by the U.S. Congress in the summer of 2012.
The program has been in existence for 20 years. The extended funding will provide financial support in the amount of $85 million per year for the next two years.
Since it was authorized in 1991, the RTP efforts have supported state trail programs nationwide, providing essential funding for tens of thousands of trail projects and fostering effective partnerships among diverse trail enthusiasts, government officials at the federal, state, and local levels, and national organizations in the conservation, recreation, and transportation fields.
