Equine Shock Wave TherapyBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · November 1, 2003

Shock wave therapy has been used in both humans and horses to pulverize kidney stones, often eliminating the need for surgery. The technique has been found to aid in bone formation and healing, and has been applied to bucked shins with encouraging results. Because the process may also tend to provide pain relief, its prerace use has been regulated within a specified number of days before competition, and veterinarians are required to report shock wave treatments to state veterinarians.
