Fewer Thoroughbred Foals Expected in 2012By Kentucky Equine Research Staff · November 21, 2011

Though records are not yet complete for Thoroughbred breeding in 2011, The Jockey Club is projecting an 11.5% drop in stallions used and a 10% drop for mares bred compared to numbers for 2010.

Some popular stallions increased their book size slightly this year, with four stallions breeding more than 190 mares during the season. Numbers fell for bookings to stallions breeding fewer than 100 mares.

Kentucky led the list of states and provinces in breeding activity, with 228 stallions covering 15,714 mares in 2011. Others in the top ten with the highest numbers of breeding animals were Florida, Louisiana, California, Ontario, Pennsylvania, New York, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. Of these, breeding numbers in 2011 exceeded 2010 totals only in Ontario.
