Funding for Recreational Trails Program in JeopardyBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · February 20, 2012
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has approved the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act of 2012, a bill that would reauthorize the Federal Highway Administration's Recreational Trails Program (RTP) for five years and allocate $85 million in annual funding for the program.
In past years, such funding has provided support for state and local trail projects, many of which have benefited equestrians.
A Senate version of the bill proposes major changes to RTP by removing dedicated funding for the program and consolidating it with several other programs. These changes would threaten previously dedicated funds needed to develop and maintain recreational and riding trails.
