Hendra Virus Death in QueenslandBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · January 31, 2012

A horse in Queensland, Australia has died from Hendra virus infection. The death reported in January of 2012 is the first from Hendra in the Townsville area since 2004.

Though the virus strikes most often in July, August, and September, it can occur year-round. Spread to horses by large fruit bats known as flying foxes, Hendra virus can also affect humans and some other animals, though these cases are not common.

Flying foxes, which are widespread and have fairly large ranges, are protected in Australia.
