The South African Grain Information Service reported that the country's 2010-2011 exports of yellow corn were the largest in 14 years, reaching 1.02 million metric tons. Combined exports of both yellow and white corn reached 2.07 metric tons, an increase of 24% over the previous year. Corn from South Africa's bumper harvest was sent to Korea, Japan, Kuwait, Portugal, Spain, and Taiwan.
Demand for corn has increased worldwide due to its vital role in many industries. In addition to being an important ingredient in feed products for horses and other livestock, corn is a staple of human nutrition and is also used in the manufacture of biofuels, plastics, paint, wallpaper, ink, cosmetics, disposable diapers, and a range of other products.
