By mid-spring of 2011, worldwide wagering on Thoroughbred races in the United States was down 8.5% from the same time in 2010, while purses rose 5.3% during the reported period. Wagering topped $2 billion in each year. U.S. race days showed a drop of almost 2% for 2011 as many tracks had shorter meet schedules or moved from hosting spring and fall meets to only one meet per year.
