Economic indicators for Thoroughbred racing showed a trend toward less wagering and fewer days of racing, though purses increased somewhat. Equibase Company released figures in September 2011 indicating betting totals fell about 6.3% that month compared to the same time in 2010. Purses in the U.S. increased 6.8% in September compared to a year earlier.

For the period of January through September 2011, wagering totaled almost $8.3 billion, while the figure for the same nine-month period in 2010 was more than $8.9 billion. Days of racing for that time span were 4,315 in 2010 and 4,089 in 2011, a decline of more than 5%.
