Jet Lag in HorsesBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · February 15, 2010
Jet lag is a common problem for human travelers, and work at the Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky indicates horses may also need several days to adapt their body rhythms after jumping several time zones.
One way to help jet-setting horses perform well after long flights is to begin adaptation before the trip. Exposing the horses to bright lights for a few extra hours either in the morning or the evening, depending on direction of travel, for several days before the trip may help reset variables involving the neuromuscular, cardiovascular, and metabolic systems.
