At the Barbury International CIC Three-Star Horse Trials in England, New Zealand rider Andrew Nicholson went into the competition with hopes of winning the event for the fourth consecutive year. Riding the 15-year-old gelding Avebury, he started well with a dressage score of 33.9 to put himself in first place, just ahead of British rider Francis Whittington. He also held the fourth position on Nereo with a score of 38.3.
After a clear show-jumping round, Nicholson and Avebury held their lead going into the cross-country phase. On Nereo, he improved his standing to third place.
Riding a flawless final day, Nicholson brought Avebury across the time line with 12 seconds to spare, claiming an unprecedented fourth win for a horse-rider pair. He also finished in second place on Nereo in the three-star division. In the two-star competition, Nicholson won Section B on Loughnatousa Joey.
