KER Conference: Focus on Nutrition for Different Types of Horses By Kentucky Equine Research Staff · October 16, 2014
At its fall conference held earlier this month, nutrition and veterinary specialists from the staff of Kentucky Equine Research (KER) presented two days of lectures and interactive workshops on various topics related to equine nutrition. Attendees from as far away as Brazil and South Africa joined feed manufacturers from North America for the conference held in Versailles, Kentucky.
To begin the conference, KER president Dr. Joe Pagan spoke on nutritional considerations for Thoroughbred performance horses and senior equine nutritionist Dr. Kathleen Crandell contrasted this with ration management for Quarter Horses. The morning concluded with a lecture from staff veterinarian Dr. Bryan Waldridge on nutritional planning for horses with metabolic disease.
Hands-on evaluation of various horses was followed by ration preparation labs where attendees learned to translate the nutritional requirements of various classes of horses into formulations that will fulfill those needs.
Other sessions at the conference highlighted KER’s nutrition advisor program, gauging equine fitness, and digital marketing strategies.
