Lyme Disease: Nutritional Support is ImportantBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · February 3, 2010
In an article in Equestrian, Dr. Joe Pagan, equine nutritionist and president of Kentucky Equine Research, explained the importance of nutritional support for horses diagnosed with Lyme disease. Pagan recommended supplementing the horse's diet with omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish oil.
These long-chain fatty acids are known to decrease inflammation, support the immune system, and possibly lessen the pain of arthritic joints. Natural vitamin E is also suggested for immune system function, as are yeast and probiotics to maintain hindgut health and function, especially for horses being treated with antibiotics.
