Managing Fertility in Feral HorsesBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · July 21, 2011
The Bureau of Land Management will begin testing a longer-lasting contraceptive product on 100 mustang mares at a holding center in Nevada. The contraceptive in current use prevents pregnancy for about 22 months, while the newer product should be effective for up to four years. Administered as an injection of time-release pellets, the new treatment prevents fertilization of a mare’s ova and does not affect her estrous cycle. The pellets are safe for all horses including mares that are pregnant at the time of treatment.
