Maryland Equine SurveyBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · April 27, 2011
A 2010 survey of horses and horse activity in Maryland showed assets of $5.6 billion for the industry as well as expenditures of almost $513 million. Maryland is home to more than 80,000 equines living on 16,000 properties. Both numbers have decreased (horse population by 7%, properties by 21%) since a similar survey was done in 2002. Horses used for recreational activities (Quarter Horses and Arabians) made up nearly half of the total, followed by Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds (39% of total). The final group—ponies, draft horses, mules, and donkeys—made up the remaining 12%.
