Medication Fights Fescue ToxicosisBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · January 13, 2011
Pregnant mares grazing fescue pastures or eating hay containing fescue are at risk for fescue toxicosis, a condition that can prolong pregnancy, lead to difficult delivery, and negatively affect lactation. Equidone, a medication manufactured by Dechra Veterinary Products, has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to prevent fescue toxicosis in periparturient mares. Available only through veterinarians, Equidone contains domperidone as its active ingredient. It is administered as an oral gel for 10 to 15 days prior to the expected foaling date and can be continued for up to 5 days post foaling .
