Name That Foal!By Kentucky Equine Research Staff · January 13, 2011
Thoroughbred foals that were born in 2009 must be officially named by February 1 of 2011 if owners and breeders want to avoid paying a late fee. The Jockey Club has issued a list of available names, some of which have been recently released for use. The available names as well as a list of names already claimed are available at registry.jockeyclub.com and mobile.registry.jockeyclub.com.
Thoroughbred names are often derived to suggest the names of a foal's sire and dam, but do not need to follow this custom. Names of horses at least ten years old that have not been raced or bred in the previous five years are usually made available for use as new registrations. There are a number of naming rules that must be followed as to number of letters and propriety. Rules for naming foals can be found at www.jockeyclub.com.
