Natural Plant Extracts Fight FungiBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · December 7, 2010

Fungi such as Fusarium and Aspergillus species cause losses in growing plants and stored grain.

Recent research shows that extracts of some plant leaves have excellent fungus-killing properties. For instance, leaves of the hard pear tree (Olinia ventosa), a forest evergreen native to South Africa, contain strong acetone. Under laboratory conditions, the diluted acetone extract from one gram of hard pear leaves killed Fusarium on five liters of affected plant material.

The use of natural plant extracts as a fungicide might delay the development of resistant molds and fungi because many extracts contain multiple antifungal substances.
