No Gall Bladder for Horses? No Problem!By Kentucky Equine Research Staff · April 28, 2011

Despite the absence of a gall bladder, horses have no problems digesting a moderate amount of fat. Adding fat to the equine diet is an easy way to boost caloric density and increase the delivery of energy. The fat content of various equine feedstuffs ranges from about 2.5% (alfalfa or timothy hay) through 3.6% and 4.6% (corn and oats, respectively) to 20% for rice bran. Vegetable oil is 100% fat.
