Obesity in horses is a dangerous condition that can be linked to a variety of health problems. Ways to reduce a horse’s body weight include limiting or eliminating grain meals; increasing exercise as tolerated; and reducing grazing time by using a dry lot or grazing muzzle. Allowing plenty of turnout is important, horses at pasture that have freedom to move around burn more calories than those kept in stalls. If grain consumption is reduced, owners should provide horses with a vitamin-mineral supplement to meet their nutritional requirements. Low-energy balancer pellets that are highly concentrated with nutrients are ideal.
