Queensland Hendra Cases Under InvestigationBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · July 7, 2011
Biosecurity officials are investigating three Hendra virus situations on Queensland properties. As of July 7, three properties have been quarantined in the Beaudesert shire following confirmation of the virus on a property in Kerry, while one Mt Alford property in the Boonah area is also quarantined after a third horse was euthanized there.
An additional horse died at Park Ridge in Logan City. While it was the only horse on the property, officials also quarantined four neighboring properties. The total number of horses under surveillance in Queensland is 42.
Hendra virus affects horses and humans, though the natural hosts are large fruit bats known as flying foxes. All known cases of Hendra infection in humans have been spread by contact with infected horses.
Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer Rick Symons reiterated the need for people to take appropriate precautions when handling any sick horse, including wearing appropriate protective clothing and equipment.
