RabiesBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · December 27, 2010

Rabies can be spread to horses or humans by contact with an infected animal. Vaccination is the best way to protect horses from rabies. Humans should not approach or come in contact with any wild animal showing neurologic signs or unusual behavior, as these could be indications of rabies. Unusual behavior might include incoordination, aggression, nocturnal animals (bats and skunks) that are active during the daytime, or wild animals not fleeing when humans are around.

While the incidence of rabies in horses is low, the disease is invariably fatal and has considerable public health significance. It is recommended that rabies vaccine be a core vaccine for all equids.
