A horse in Patrick County in southern Virginia has tested positive for rabies. The disease, which is invariably fatal, can be spread to horses through the bite of an infected animal such as a fox, skunk, bat, or raccoon. Rabies is uncommon in horses and can be prevented by vaccinating annually, a practice recommended by the American Association of Equine Practitioners.
