Safe Field SedationBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · December 20, 2010
Veterinarians and horse owners can't always choose a clinical setting for procedures like difficult foalings or repair of serious wounds. When sedation and anesthesia are called for in a field situation, finding a safe location is important. Covered arenas and outdoor paddocks are usually good choices, according to an article in Veterinary Practice News, because there is plenty of space for a veterinarian to work; lighting is usually acceptable; and these areas are free of dangerous objects that could cause injury when the horse may be skittish and disoriented while waking up from anesthesia.
