Sport Horse Incentive Program for ThoroughbredsBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · November 21, 2011

The Jockey Club is ready to launch the Thoroughbred Incentive Program, or T.I.P., to recognize and reward the versatility of Thoroughbred horses. It is hoped that the program will encourage the adoption and retraining of retired racehorses for second careers in pleasure and competition fields.

Horse show organizers are encouraged to incorporate T.I.P. classes into their competitions. The incentive program will sponsor ribbons and prizes for winners and high point awards in dressage, eventing, hunters, jumpers, and western and English pleasure classes.

Two annual awards have been established through the program. The T.I.P. Thoroughbred of the Year Award will honor a retired racehorse that has excelled in a non-show field such as police work or equine-assisted therapy. The T.I.P. Young Rider of the Year Award will be given to a rider 18 years old or younger who owns or leases a Thoroughbred for activities with a group such as 4-H or Pony Club.

Horse show managers who want to include qualifying classes should complete an application that is available at www.tjctip.com. Riders interested in qualifying for awards can find information on the same site.
