Straight from the Horse’s MouthBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · March 11, 2011
The horse's tongue is anchored at the back of the throat and can be as much as 11 inches (28 centimeters) long, according to a note in Equus. Harsh bit use, rough bit surfaces, splinters from broken stall equipment, and stemmy forage may cause injuries to the tongue.
Some horses seem to enjoy letting several inches of tongue hang from their mouths, but if the horse seems unable to control movement of his tongue, this may be a sign of botulism, nerve damage, or another neurologic problem.
