Thoroughbred HistoryBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · December 20, 2010

All of today's Thoroughbred horses trace back to one or more of the three foundation sires: the Byerley Turk, the Darley Arabian, and the Godolphin Barb. One of the first attempts to establish a Thoroughbred registry was made by James Weatherby in 1791. His General Stud Book contained the pedigrees of 387 mares whose connection to the foundations sires he had established. Eighty years later, the American Stud Book was compiled, and The Jockey Club took over Thoroughbred registrations in 1896. That year, 3000 foals were registered.
