The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities released figures for 2009 showing that the United States, Australia, and Japan had the highest number of Thoroughbred races offered per year. Japan led the list for total purses, followed by the United States and Australia. Countries registering more than 10,000 Thoroughbred mares were the United States with 45,000; Australia with 28,000; Ireland with 19,000; and Argentina with 14,000. The same countries topped the list for number of foals registered.
