Triple Crown Race Record Verified for SecretariatBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · June 26, 2012

Almost 40 years after he captured the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing, Secretariat has been recognized as setting race and track records in the Preakness Stakes, which he won in 1973.

The Maryland Racing Commission ruled to change the official time for the race to 1:53 rather than the erroneous 1:55 that had been recorded on the day of the contest. Several independent timers had felt the track time was incorrect, and it was later posted as 1:54 2/5. The new ruling establishes Secretariat’s record for the Preakness Stakes and also for any race of that length at Pimlico Race Course.

The famous stallion already held the race and course records for the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, the other two Triple Crown races.
