UC Davis Offers Instructional Horsepacking TripsBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · February 6, 2012

The UC Davis Extension Department is offering two horsepacking trips for hands-on learning in a wilderness setting.

A four-day trip into the Inyo National Forest in June of 2012 will concentrate on observing and photographing wild mustang herds while studying their social structure. Camping, wildflower study, and wonderful scenery are included as participants explore this remote area on horseback. Horses, tack, and meals are included.

The other option, a seven-day ride in July of 2012 in the Golden Trout Wilderness of the Sierras, will include instruction in backcountry management of livestock, preventative medicine, treating equine illness and injury in the wilderness, and all phases of horsepacking such as choosing equipment, fitting saddles, making loads, learning hitches, and leading strings of mules.
