Vitamin E Important for Elderly HorsesBy Kentucky Equine Research Staff · November 30, 2010
As a horse ages, its immune system shows a decline in strength. In a study in which older horses were supplemented with vitamin E at a level 15 times the recommended amount, supplemented horses showed higher vitamin E blood levels, better ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, and higher levels of blood immunoglobulins than control horses.
Because other studies have shown that oversupplementation with vitamin E could interfere with beta-carotene absorption, owners are advised to consult a veterinarian or equine nutritionist before adding large amounts of vitamin E to an elderly horse's diet.
